Bad Experience- Alleppy Houseboat , Kerala

We had a one night stay in Alleppy house boat in October first week. We were welcomed by boat crew- boat driver, cook and attendant.

Our luggage was taken to room and we were offered orange juice followed by lunch which was pretty simple and home cooked food.
Ours was one bedroom houseboat with a deck. We loved the deck area as it offered the best views of the breathtaking backwaters!
The house boat staff was nice and courteous. However, as we were late, as soon as we boarded the boat...boat was stopped for lunch within 15 minutes.
After lunch we were served a cup of coffee and plate of pakoras (snack) .
Coming on to interiors of boats..that was the worst part.
The room was very small and it was very  stinky. Water smell was there all over the place. The entire place was attacked by termites and there was powder everywhere in bedroom.Washroom was very small and no hot water was available. For hot water , we had to request the cook and he took all the time in the world..to get it for us. Later we were informed AC facility was only available from 9pm to 6am.
TV was not in room and we were told tv facility was available after only 730 pm. Electricity cable was pulled from a near by house after boat was parked and only then tv was started. The place where it was parked was a small village where boat driver and cook had their house.
Post lunch boat was moving for approx one hour and  again it was parked saying..the maximum timings allowed for ride are till 5pm . However, the fact is , the place it was parked at the end of the day..rest of the boats kept arriving till 7pm.
Loud music was played in other boats which was missing in our boat.
As soon as it became dark, the boat was attacked by insects and mosquitoes. Once we complained of insects and mosquitoes...the attendant covered the entire boat with some cover which made it all the more suffocating. Instead , it would have been a little better had they covered it with some net like other boats.
While making the booking ,we had requested for cake and room decoration . So, the attendant made good efforts with limited resources. He had got a plum cake and arranged dinner with candle light, switching off all the lights of the boat. His effort was appreciable.
In morning , the boat driver did not reach on time...and most of the boats had already left that place and we were the last ones who moved out. After one round he left us back around 9 am. In breakfast Idli and Sambar was served which was good.

Points to be noted
It is advisable to stay in hotel and just take a day ride in boat to enjoy beauty of place.
In case you are really interested in staying in house boat please check the boat before hand. There are no food options , menu is fixed (though food is decent , cleanliness of kitchen could be a issue)..so it would be better to talk about this before making booking. There was nothing much with regards to entertainment so one can carry laptop to watch movie or pack of cards.
Overall I would say place is worth visiting because it offers breathtaking beauty of backwaters. However, stay in house can prove to be wrong decision..so one needs to be very careful.
